Position Objectives:

The Truck Driver – Laborer – Equipment Operator performs semi-skilled manual labor in the operation of light and moderately heavy trucks and motorized equipment on road construction and repair, and in the snow and ice removal operations of the Highway Department.

Able to handle and operate all truck attachments and carry out assignments with relative ease. May operate larger pieces of equipment, but only on a temporary or emergency basis. Participates in loading and unloading work. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks in connection with the operation of trucks or during completion of seasonal work projects. Work instructions may be received in detail for each job to be performed or may follow an established routine. Work is subject to check while in progress and upon completion by the Highway Department Supervisor or Foreman.

Reports to the Highway Department Supervisor or Foreman.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1.       Operates trucks and sanders in the plowing, sanding and snow removal of town roads.
  2.       Operates light to moderately heavy trucks in performance of public works duties.
  3.       May operate other light equipment as needed and may operate heavier equipment such as front-end loaders on an incidental or emergency basis.
  4.       Operates a light or moderately heavy truck transporting dirt, gravel, wood and construction materials; assists in loading or unloading trucks.
  5.       Performs varied maintenance work including rebuilding storm drains and culverts, patching and building roads and other general duties.
  6.       Assists in the seasonal repair and maintenance of town parks, cemeteries, properties and buildings.
  7.       Picks up debris such as blow-downs; straightens signs and posts; picks up leaves, brush and other trash.
  8.       Winterizes trucks and mounts sanders.
  9.       Assists in general repair and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment and assists in general maintenance of the highway garage.
  10.   Performs related work as required.

Minimum Requirements:

The Truck Driver – Laborer – Equipment Operator requires previous experience in the operation of light and moderately heavy trucks and motorized equipment. Previous experience operating a snowplow with wing and equipment used for snow removal is desirable.

Must be available during winter periods to conduct snow removal operations, as required.

Must have the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse climatic conditions, with the physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work required.

Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

Position works indoors in a garage/shop environment and outdoors conducting road maintenance operations, typically inside a vehicle, but at times on foot, exposed to weather elements.

Essential Requirements are:

  1.       Minimum Class B license with no violations (essential).
  2.       Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the essential job functions and requirements of work.
  3.       Sufficient education to perform job related duties, or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Desirable Training and Experience:

  1.       Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.
  2.       Knowledge of the geography of the towns, including the location of roads.
  3.       Ability to operate trucks and other lighter motorized equipment safely and according to laws and regulations.
  4.       Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and service automotive equipment.
  5.       Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  6.       Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, equipment and tools of the automotive and construction equipment trade as they relate to Highway Department operations.
