Position Objectives:

The Seasonal Highway Laborer / Flagger performs semi-skilled and manual labor in support of Highway Department operations, with primary responsibilities including traffic control (flagging) and maintenance of municipal grounds and facilities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Highway Director or Foreman.
This position involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions and supports a wide range of seasonal public works activities. Assignments may be routine or provided with specific instruction depending on the task.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Performs traffic control duties, including flagging, in accordance with safety standards and established procedures.

·         Assists Highway crew with roadside work zones to ensure safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

·         Performs yard maintenance at Highway Department facilities, including mowing, trimming, brush removal, and general upkeep.

·         Assists in maintenance of town properties, parks, cemeteries, and public spaces.

·         Picks up debris such as branches, litter, and storm-related materials.

·         Assists with basic road maintenance activities, including patching, ditching, and culvert cleaning.

·         Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and work areas.

·         Assists with seasonal preparation and cleanup tasks.

·         Follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

·         Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

Equipment Operation and Requirements:

·         Operates lawn maintenance equipment, including zero-turn mowers, walk-behind mowers, and push mowers.

·         Operates handheld equipment such as weed whackers (string trimmers), leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers.

·         Uses basic hand tools including shovels, rakes, and other grounds maintenance equipment.

·         Performs routine cleaning and basic maintenance of assigned equipment (fueling, inspection, minor adjustments).

·         Operates equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and Town safety policies.

·         May operate light-duty Town vehicles as needed (no CDL required).

 

Requirements of Work:

The Seasonal Highway Laborer / Flagger position requires the ability to perform physically demanding labor under varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Work is performed outdoors for extended periods and may involve standing for long durations, lifting, bending, and repetitive motion.

Employees must be available to work assigned schedules and may be required to assist during high-demand periods.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Basic knowledge of traffic control procedures and safety practices (training may be provided).

·         Ability to safely operate lawn and grounds maintenance equipment.

·         Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

·         Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in outdoor environments.

·         Ability to work safely in proximity to traffic and moving equipment.

·         Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.

·         Dependability and willingness to complete assigned tasks efficiently.

 

Job Qualifications:

·         Must be at least 18 years of age.

·         Must possess a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

·         Ability to perform the essential job functions and physical requirements of the position.

·         Previous experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, or public works is preferred but not required.

Work Environment:

Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and occasionally indoors in a garage or shop environment. The position involves exposure to traffic, noise, equipment operation, and seasonal environmental conditions.

Employment Status:

Seasonal / Temporary Position (typically spring through fall, with potential variability based on operational needs).
